New to Yoga?

So, you just signed up for your very first yoga class. Maybe you're excited and just a little bit nervous. Wondering how to prepare and if there is anything important you should know?  Here's a quick list to get you started.

Read the class description carefully: Read the class description to make sure the class is suited for you. If you are looking for relaxation, you may not want to participate in a vigorous power flow. The class description will also let you know if the class is designed for beginners.

What do I need to bring: You should have a yoga mat or some sort of soft surface. If you are at home and don't have a yoga mat, a carpet or towel will work well. If your knees are tender, you may want to consider using something more padded.

Classes will sometimes use props. This could include items such as: a strap, blocks, blanket, bolsters, a wall or chair. Most of these items can be substituted if you are doing yoga at home. Try a belt instead of a yoga strap or maybe a stack of books instead of a block. Some studios will provide these props and most of the time they are offered as options, check the course description.

Bring a water bottle or something to drink that is hydrating, like coconut water or herbal teas. Stay away from beverages with caffeine prior to class.

If you are outdoors, consider whether you would need some sunscreen or insect repellent.

What should I wear: Wear something comfortable that allows you to move around freely. Avoid hoodies or clothing with buttons. Wear minimal jewelry. If you have long hair, it's best to put it up in a ponytail.

How should I prepare: Get a good night's rest. Avoid eating a large meal for at least 2 hours prior to class. If you are at home, find a quiet spot where you are able to relax. Be on time or allow a little extra time to settle and arrive to class.

Technology and online classes: Come a little early if it's your first class. Ask the teacher questions and make sure the teacher knows if you have any conditions or injuries that would affect your yoga practice. If the teacher hasn’t already, be sure to mute your microphone.

Anything else I need to know: If you plan on visiting a studio for an in-person class check if they have any current COVID precautions that you should be aware of.

When you enter a studio, it is customary to remove your shoes before coming into the practice area. Remember it is a place of calm, so most people will be speaking softly or remain quiet. The lighting may be dim.
